LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team dropped its home opener, 2-0, to McDaniel on Monday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
Playing in rainy conditions, both teams used the first 35:00 as a feeling out period before the Green Terror (1-0) tallied a pair of goals early in the second half and then held W&L (1-2) at bay.
McDaniel struck just after halftime as first-year Natalie Price (Elkton, Md./Elkton) took a feed from senior Katie Corson (Ocean View, N.J./Ocean City) and slipped a shot past W&L junior goalkeeper Caroline Sutherland (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor).
Just over 3:00 later the Green Terror struck again. This time, junior Katie Jones (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) blasted an unassisted goal past Sutherland to give McDaniel a 2-0 lead.
The Generals had several chances late in the game to gain ground on the Green Terror, but senior keeper Stephanie Thomson (Glen Burnie, Md./Chesapeake) kept the Blue and White off the scoreboard, making six saves in the contest.
For the Generals, junior Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) started in goal and played the opening 35:00, before being replaced by Sutherland at the break. Kyne then re-entered at the 51:43 mark and played out the remainder of the contest. For the game, Kyne made five saves and did not allow a goal, while Sutherland allowed the two goals and did not come up with a save. Senior midfielder Lindsey Edmonds (St. Louis, Mo./Willa Duchesne) added a defensive save for the Generals.
The Generals return to action on Friday when they travel to Mary Washington for a 6:00 pm contest.
