OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team rallied from a two-goal halftime deficit to post a 3-2 win over Stevenson on Thursday evening in the season-opener for both teams.
The Mustangs' Brittany Martin put Stevenson (0-1) on the board with an unassisted goal less than 8:00 into the contest. In the 15th minute, Martin extended the Mustangs' lead to 2-0 when she deposited a pass from Ashley Beam past W&L junior goalkeeper Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven).
The Generals' offense came to life in the second half as junior Katelyn Daugherty (Chester, Va./Governor's School) tallied W&L's (1-0) first goal, unassisted, at the 37:55 mark.
W&L knotted the game at 2-2 at the 50:12 mark courtesy of an unassisted marker from sophomore Taylor Zusi (Summit, N.J./Kent Place) and in the waning minutes of the contest, first-year Lindsey Purpura (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) gave W&L its first win in a season opener since 2007 with an unassisted goal with just under 9:00 to play.
The second half rally made a winner of junior goalkeeper Caroline Sutherland (Huntington, N.Y./COld Spring Harbor), who played the entire second half recording three saves. Kyne made four saves in the first half and Kelsi Zimmerman came up with seven saves for the Mustangs. Alyssa Russell had a pair of defensive saves for Stevenson.
The Generals return to action on Friday when they take on Catholic at 4:30 pm.
