W&L's Mathews and Tran Named to Field Hockey All-State Team

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Washington and Lee seniors Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) and Kelly Tran (Simsbury, Conn./Ethel Walker) were both named to the 2010 Field Hockey All-State First Team as selected by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) on Friday.

Mathews, a midfielder, earned her third-career all-state honor after starting all 17 games and finishing with 15 points on four goals and a team-high seven assists. She also added one defensive save. Her seven assists were tied for the fourth-most in the ODAC and she wrapped up her career ranked third all-time at W&L with 18 career assists.

She was also a NFHCA South Region Second Team honoree, a first team all-conference selection and the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

A forward, Tran made 17 starts and earned her first all-state nod after tallying a career-high 35 points on 14 goals and seven assists on her way to being named to the first team all-conference squad. She ranked in the Top 5 in the ODAC in all three categories. Her 35 points this season marked the fifth-most prolific season at W&L and her 14 goals ranked as the sixth-most scored in a single season.
W&L wrapped up the 2010 season with a 9-8 overall record and a 5-2 mark in the ODAC. The Generals advanced to the ODAC semifinals for the ninth-straight year before falling to Randolph-Macon, 5-3.
