LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team advanced to the ODAC semifinals for the ninth-straight year with a 4-1 victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
Junior midfielder Annie Stevenson (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) opened the scoring less than six minutes into the contest when she scored an unassisted goal at the 5:44 mark to give W&L a 1-0 lead.
That lead swelled to 2-0 when Stevenson then found senior forward Kelly Tran (Simsbury, Conn./Ethel Walker) in front of the cage for Tran's 13th goal of the season at the 17:14 mark.
Junior midfielder Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Holy Cross) made it 3-0 in favor of W&L in the 29th minute when she took a pass from sophomore midfielder Chelsea Stevenson (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and beat VWC's Kirsten Olsen (Springfield, Va./Lorton South County).
The Marlins dented the scoreboard less than two minutes later when first-year midfielder Nikki Cuthbert (Morrisville, Va./Fairless Hill Pennsbury) scored for VWC.
Tran capped the scoring with the only goal in the second half, an unassisted effort in the 48th minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Sutherland (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Harbor) played all 70:00 for the Generals in goal and made one save. Olsen made two saves for the Marlins.
