W&L FH Earns 2-1 OT Win over BC; Orrison Earns Win No. 100
BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Washington and Lee field hockey team rallied for a 2-1 overtime win over Bridgewater on Wednesday evening at Mapp Field. The win was the 100th at W&L for Head Coach Wendy Orrison.
The Eagles (9-8, 3-4 ODAC) took an early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when Brianna Jacques scored unassisted.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of BC through the break and into the 47th minute before W&L (8-7, 5-2 ODAC) senior defender Jennie Norcini (Wayne, Pa./Episcopal) converted a penalty corner at 46:18 to tie the contest at 1-1. Junior midfielder Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Holy Cross) and senior midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) picked up assists on Norcini's goal.
Despite outshooting the Eagles 7-0 in the second half, the Generals were unable to find the winning tally in regulation and the game proceeded to overtime.
In the extra period, sophomore defender Lindsay Crittendon (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine's) made a winner of the Generals when she took a pass from senior forward Kelly Tran (Simsbury, Conn./Ethel Walker) and beat BC's Taylor Waddell for the game-winning goal at the 78:43 mark.
Sophomore Caroline Sutherland (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Harbor) started in goal for the Generals and made four stops in playing all 78:43. Jacques also played the duration for the Eagles and was credited with three saves in the loss.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday in the opening round of the ODAC Tournament. The Generals' opponent at the time of the game have yet to be determined.
