LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior forward Kelly Tran (Simsbury, Conn./Ethel Walker) recorded her first-career hat trick as the Washington and Lee field hockey team defeated Eastern Mennonite, 4-0, on Tuesday night at the W&L Turf Field.
Senior midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) fed a pinpoint pass to Tran in front of EMU senior Becky Nolt (East Berlin, Pa./Bermudian Springs) that she deposited past the Royals' keeper just 2:00 into the contest to put W&L up 1-0.
Junior midfielder Annie Stevenson (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country) then took a pass from sophomore midfielder Chelsea Stevenson (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and beat Nolt to push the Generals' advantage to 2-0 at the 13:28 mark.
W&L's lead swelled to 3-0 at the 27:27 mark of the opening stanza when Tran notched her second goal following a feed from senior defender Jennie Norcini (Wayne, Pa./Episcopal).
In the second half, Tran finished off her hat trick with an unassisted goal in the 38th minute to cap the scoring.
Sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Sutherland (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Harbor) came up with five saves and Norcini added a defensive save for the Generals as W&L posted its second shutout win of the season.
Nolt made eight saves for the Royals as W&L outshot EMU, 18-12, including 13-1 in the opening period.
Washington and Lee returns to action when it takes on Rhodes at 2:00 pm on Saturday. That game will be played on a neutral field at Sewanee.
