SALEM, Va. -- Junior midfielder Annie Stevenson (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) scored two goals and senior midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) added a goal and two assists as the Washington and Lee field hockey team used four second-half goals to defeat Roanoke College, 5-2, at Kerr Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Maroons (1-8, 0-3) took a brief 2-1 lead in the second half as Lianna Hachborn netted a goal following a pass from Abby Bjork just under nine minutes into the half.
However, it was all W&L from there as sophomore midfielder Chelsea Stevenson (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) tied the match at the 46:27 mark with an unassisted tally and Annie Stevenon put the Generals up (3-2) for good with her first goal of the game following a pass from Mathews in the 51st minute.
Senior forward Kelly Tran (Simsbury, Conn./Ethel Walker) added a goal in the 55th minute, with Mathews earning another assist, and Annie Stevenson scored at the 62:09 mark off a feed from junior midfielder Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Holy Cross) to close out the game.
The Generals held a 20-7 advantage in shots and boasted a 14-1 margin in penalty corners.
Sophomore Caroline Sutherland (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Harbor) played all 70:00 in the cage for the Generals and came up with three saves in picking up her fifth win of the season.
Cristina Scichilone played the duration in the cage for Roanoke and was credited with 10 saves.
The Generals return to action on Saturday as they travel to Lynchburg College for a 1:00 pm contest.
