W&L Field Hockey Flies Past Eagles, 4-2
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team defeated Mary Washington, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
W&L grabbed a 2-0 lead at the 21:30 mark of the first half when junior forward Emily Kunkel (North Wales, Pa./Germantown) redirected a shot from Tran past Bowdren for her second goal of the season.
In the second half, Tran netted her sixth goal of the season off a feed from junior midfielder Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Holy Cross) at the 47:40 mark to give the Generals a 3-0 advantage.
Mary Washington cut into the Generals' lead at the 51:21 mark when senior defender Heidi Sheehan (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) found the back of the cage following a pass from first-year midfielder Caitlin Baker (Falls Church, Va./McLean) to make it 3-1 in favor of W&L.
Sophomore forward Ashley Barnes (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) scored an unassisted goal for the Generals at the 63:13 mark to make it a 4-1 contest and Baker capped the scoring for UMW when she converted a penalty corner in the 70th minute.
Bowdren started in goal for the Eagles and played the first 21:30, allowing two goals and making one save. Sophomore Claire Gianelle (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) played the final 48:30 and was credited with three saves while allowing a pair of goals.
Sophomore Caroline Sutherland (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Harbor) played all 70:00 in goal for the Generals and came up with seven saves.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Roanoke College for a 6:00 pm contest.
