W&L Field Hockey Overpowers Virginia Wesleyan, 6-2

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior forward Kelly Tran (Simsbury, Conn./Ethel Walker) and junior midfielder Annie Stevenson (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) tallied two goals apiece and the Washington and Lee field hockey team outshot Virginia Wesleyan, 40-5, en route to a 6-2 victory on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.

The Generals (3-2, 1-0 ODAC) scored three goals in a six-minute span in the first half to take command of the game. Junior forward Emily Kunkel (North Wales, Pa./Germantown Academy) started the scoring with an unassisted goal at the 19:34 mark. Stevenson quickly gave the Generals a 2-0 lead when she scored unassisted at the 22:20 mark.

Senior defender Jennie Norcini (Wayne, Pa./Episcopal) tacked on a third goal when she converted a penalty stroke just over three minutes later. Tran recorded her first goal of the match late in the first half to give the Generals a 4-0 advantage at the break.

W&L outshot VWC (0-9, 0-2) 23-0 in the first half and the Generals received nine penalty corners while the Marlins did not have any.
 
Stevenson opened the scoring in the second half when she scored off a feed from Tran at the 48:20 mark to give the Generals a 5-0 lead.
 
VWC made it a 5-1 game when sophomore defender Evan Bunting (Poquoson, Va./Poquoson) converted a penalty corner at the 52:47 mark.
 
Tran added her second goal of the contest, this one coming off a feed from junior midfielder Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Holy Cross), with under three minutes remaining in the game to cap the scoring for the Generals.
 
Bunting tallied a second goal for the Marlins on another penalty corner with no time remaining on the clock. First-year forward Taylor Lober (Wilmington, Del./Concord) recorded a pair of assists for VWC.
 
First-year Laura Thorn (Owings, Md./Prince Frederick Calvert) played all 70:00 in goal for the Marlins and made 20 saves. Sophomore Caroline Sutherland (Huntington, N.Y./Cold Harbor) was in goal for the Generals and came up with a pair of saves.
 
W&L returns to action on Sunday when it hosts No. 8 Christopher Newport at 3:00 pm.
