W&L Field Hockey Bests McDaniel, 2-1
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team
scored with just over five minutes remaining in the game to capture
a 2-1 win over McDaniel at the W&L Turf Field on Saturday
afternoon.
W&L (1-1) senior forward Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St.
John’s) opened the scoring with and unassisted goal in the
33rd minute to give W&L a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
McDaniel (1-2) evened the score at 1-1 in the 48th minute on an
unassisted goal by sophomore forward Lindsay Riordon (Monkton,
Md./Hereford).
However, the Generals took control of the contest when senior
forward Alex Caritis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side) netted her first
goal of the year in the 63rd minute. Caritis redirected a shot from
sophomore forward Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Academy of the
Holy Cross) past sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Thomson (Glen
Burnie, Md./Chesapeake) for the game-winning goal.
W&L senior goalkeeper Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St.
Stephen’s & St. Agnes) played all 70:00 minutes in the
cage and made four stops for the Generals. Thomson also played the
entirety for McDaniel and was credited with eight saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday when it travels to
Newport News, Va., to take on Christopher Newport at 6:00 pm.
