HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team
saw its season end with a 3-1 loss to Eastern Mennonite in the
semifinal round of the ODAC Tournament on Tuesday evening at the
EMU Turf Field.
The Royals (10-7) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at 14:43 of the first half when Linda Cimini scored off a feed from Hailee Rittle. EMU quickly made it 2-0 when Sarah Roth found Alyssa Derstine on the left wing at the 18:05 mark.
W&L cut the deficit in half at 2-1, when first-year Katharine Price (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) scored unassisted from the top of the circle in the 21st minute. EMU turned away several W&L scoring chances late in the first half and the opening stanza ended with the Royals holding a 2-1 advantage.
EMU would tally the only goal of the second half when Katie Cimini scored unassisted in the 48th minute to put the score at 3-1.
Eastern Mennonite outshot the Generals 30-5 and first-year goalkeeper Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) made 14 saves for W&L as she played the bulk of the game in goal. EMU’s Becky Nolt made a pair of saves for the Royals.
The three goals allowed by the Generals marked the first time in six games that they had surrendered a goal. The last time W&L allowed a goal was in the second half of a 6-0 loss to Eastern Mennonite on Oct. 7.
Senior forward Steph Mansey (Mendham, N.J./Randolph) and sophomore forward Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Holy Cross) were named to the All-Tournament team at the conclusion of play.
With the loss, the Generals finish the season with an overall record of 10-7 and a 5-2 mark in ODAC play. EMU now advances to the ODAC Championship game on Saturday where it will take on Lynchburg for the league crown.
