Armstrong Sets Scoring Mark, W&L FH Falls 3-2
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- On a day when senior Sallie Armstrong
(Houston, Texas/St. John’s) became the program’s
all-time leading scorer, the Washington and Lee field hockey team
saw a second-half comeback attempt fall just short as it fell, 3-2,
to Mary Washington on Sunday afternoon at the Battleground.
Armstrong notched a goal and an assist and moved past Jane Beall ’05 to become the field hockey team’s all-time leading scorer with 108 career points. Armstrong scored three goals in W&L’s 4-1 win over Limestone on Friday to become the school’s all-time leader in goals scored as well. She now has 46 career goals and 16 career assists.
UMW (7-5) opened the scoring at the 17:29 mark of the first half when MacKenzie Sloan scored off a Morgan Jones pass to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. The Eagles stretched their lead to 2-0 when Jones found Amy Stevens for a goal at the 26:28 mark.
Mary Washington extended its lead to 3-0 just over five minutes into the second half when Kaitlyn Ripley put a pass from Erin Duffy past W&L (4-5) first-year Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) at the 40:12 mark.
W&L got on the board just 29 seconds later when Armstrong scored following a feed from first-year Ashley Barnes (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary’s) to make it a 3-1 game in favor of the Eagles. W&L inched within a goal at 3-2 when Armstrong found Barnes for a goal at the 45:08 mark, but the Eagles kept W&L off the board the rest of the way to escape with the win.
Senior Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes) and Kyne split time in goal for the Generals. Habliston made two saves in 29:37 of play.
Chrissy Bowdren played all 70:00 in the cage for the Eagles and made three saves.
