Armstrong Sets Mark, W&L FH Beats Limestone, 4-1

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John’s) tallied her first hat trick of the season and became the Generals’ all-time leader in goals scored as the W&L field hockey team defeated Limestone, 4-1, on Friday night at the W&L Turf Field.

Armstrong, who entered the game in a tie with Jane Beall ’05 atop W&L’s all-time goals-scored list with 42, became the Generals all-time leader at the 10:41 mark of the first half when she drove a penalty corner past Limestone’s first-year keeper Julie Medeiros (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) to give the Blue and White a 1-0 lead.

Despite outshooting the Saints 11-1 in the opening period, W&L (4-4) maintained the 1-0 lead into the break.

Armstrong made it a 2-0 game at the 38:36 mark and six minutes later she tallied her third goal of the contest to give the Generals a 3-0 cushion. With the six total points, Armstrong is now just two points shy of becoming Washington and Lee’s all-time scoring leader. She currently has 105 career points (45g, 15 a).

Limestone (1-8) first-year Sara Parker (East Brunswick, N.J./East Brunswick) cut the W&L deficit to two, 3-1, when she scored unassisted at the 46:45 mark.

Junior Kate Donnelly (Houston, Texas/St. John’s) concluded the scoring when she made it a 4-1 game following a feed from junior Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) at 64:17.

Sophomore Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Holy Cross) had three assists for the Generals and senior Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes) played the full 70:00 in the cage and recorded four saves to earn her fourth win of the season.

Medeiros and first-year Kelsi Zimmerman (Odenton, Md./Arundel) split time in goal. Medeiros allowed one goal and was credited with four saves, while Zimmerman allowed three goals and made six saves.

The Generals return to action on Sunday when they take on Mary Washington at 2:00 pm.
