Two W&L Student-Athletes Honored With Weekly Award
SALEM, Va. -- Washington and Lee had a pair of student-athletes
earn Athlete of the Week honors from the Old Dominion Athletic
Conference on Monday afternoon.
Senior field hockey player Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St.
John’s) and junior volleyball player Louise Brooks
(Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) were honored for the week ending Oct.
18.
A forward on the field hockey team, Armstrong tallied three goals
and an assist over a two-game stretch last week. She notched a pair
of goals and an assist in a 7-0 win over Roanoke on Tuesday and
followed that up with the game-winning goal in overtime as W&L
defeated Rhodes, 1-0, on Sunday.
Over her last six games, Armstrong has tallied nine goals and a
pair of assists after notching just three goals over the
Generals’ first seven games. W&L is now 7-6 on the season
and in third place in the ODAC with a mark of 4-2.
Brooks, a middle blocker on the volleyball team, posted 44 kills
and 10 blocks over four matches last week as W&L improved to
14-10 overall and 6-2 in the ODAC, while stretching its season-high
win streak to nine matches.
Brooks tallied season-highs with 20 kills and six blocks as the
Generals avenged an early season loss to Christopher Newport with a
3-2 win on Saturday. Brooks also added 10 digs in the victory. On
the season, she is second on the team in kills (214) and blocks
(56), while leading the squad with a hitting percentage of
.323.
The W&L volleyball team returns to action on Tuesday when it
travels to Mary Baldwin for a 6:30 pm match, while the field hockey
team is also in action on Tuesday, hosting Sewanee at 4:00 pm.
