W&L Field Hockey Blanks Bridgewater, 5-0
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team
improved to 3-2 in conference play with a 5-0 shutout of
Bridgewater at the W&L Turf Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Generals opened up the scoring in the seventh minute when senior Grace McGee (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. McKellam) converted a penalty shot at the 6:20 mark. W&L (5-6, 3-2 ODAC) made it a 2-0 game in the 10th minute when senior Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John’s) scored off an assist from sophomore Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Holy Cross) following a penalty corner and would take that two-goal advantage into the break.
In the second half, fist-year Ashley Barnes (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) scored unassisted to make it a 3-0 game at the 52:33 mark. Senior Steph Mansey (Mendham, N.J./Randolph) extended the Generals’ lead to 4-0 in the 58th minute following a pass from first-year Katharine Price (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) .
Armstrong capped the game’s scoring when Mansey found her with a pass right in front of the Bridgewater goal that Armstrong put past BC senior Elizabeth Sullivan (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) for her second goal of the game.
Senior Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes) and first-year Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) each saw time in the cage and made two saves apiece in combining to post the Generals’ first shutout this season.
Sullivan made nine saves for the Eagles as W&L held a 23-7 advantage in shots, including a 14-4 lead in shots on goal.
The Generals return to action on Tuesday when they host Roanoke at 4:00 pm.
