LEXINGTON, Va. -- The 14th-ranked Lynchburg field hockey team
scored two goals in the game’s final four minutes to rally
for a 3-2 win over Washington and Lee on Wednesday night at the
W&L Turf Field.
W&L (1-4, 0-1 ODAC) took a 1-0 lead late in the first half when sophomore Annie Stevenson (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) scored off a feed from first-year Chelsea Stevenson (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest Academy) in the 33rd minute to give the Generals the lead at the break.
Following a goal from Lynchburg sophomore Kristina Morris (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) in the 40th minute that tied that game at 1-1, W&L took a 2-1 lead in the 49th minute when Chelsea Stevenson found sophomore Lindsey Edmonds (St. Louis, Mo./Villa Duchesne) in front of the cage for the Generals’ second goal of the contest.
W&L was poised to post its first win over Lynchburg since 2005 before the Hornets (6-2, 2-0) scored a pair of goals late in the second period to escape with the win. LC sophomore Jordan Warrington (Ocean View, Del./Indian River) tied the game at 2-2 on an unassisted goal following a timeout at the 66:20 mark and senior Allie Weir (Richmond, Va./James River) scored the game-winner off a feed from Warrington with just two minutes remaining.
Senior Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes) made eight saves for the Generals and senior Grace McGee (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. McKellam) added one defensive save. Senior Sarah Cates (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) made five saves for the Hornets, while senior Samantha Marano (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) contributed one defensive save.
