MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Two members of the Washington and Lee football team were named to the D3football.com Preseason All-America team which was released on Monday afternoon.
Sophomore running back Josh Breece (Lorton, Va. / Stone Bridge) was named to the first team, while senior offensive tackle Mitch Hornsby (Loganville, Ga. / Archer) was selected to the third team. Breece is the only sophomore named to any one of the three teams.
Breece, who was also named to the preseason starting lineup for the 2018 College Football America Yearbook, is coming off one of the best seasons in program history. He totaled an ODAC-record 1,825 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2017 despite not earning his first start until the fifth game of the season. He finished third in Division III in rushing, second in yards per carry (7.7), eighth in rushing touchdowns and tied for 15th in total points (108).
Breece produced nine 100-yard rushing efforts, including each of the final eight games of the season to tie a program record. He finished the season with 169 yards against Mount Union, the most the Purple Raiders had allowed to an opposing running back since the 2014 season (50 games).
For his efforts, Breece earned First Team All-ODAC, First Team All-State, D3football.com First Team All-South Region and AP Second Team All-America laurels. He added ODAC Rookie of the Year honors, VaSID Offensive Rookie of the Year accolades, and was named the Virginia College Division Offensive Player of the Year by the Roanoke Times.
Hornsby played a major role in helping pave the way for Breece's gaudy rushing numbers a season ago. As a team, W&L averaged 461.5 yards and 34.8 points per game, and ranked fourth in Division III in time of possession (34:27). The Generals were second in Division III in rushing with an average of 403.2 yards per game, and the line surrendered just seven sacks on the season. The Blue & White converted on 45.8 percent of their third down conversions and finished the season with the second-most rushing yards (4,435), total yards (5,077) and rushing touchdowns (48) for a season in program history.
Last season, Hornsby earned First Team All-ODAC, VaSID First Team All-State, Roanoke Times Second Team All-State and D3football.com Second Team All-South Region accolades.
W&L will begin the 2018 campaign under the direction of first-year Head Coach Garrett LeRose '07. LeRose replaced Scott Abell, who left for Davidson College after six seasons. He will coach his first game on September 1 at Dickinson College. Opening kickoff is slated for 1:00 pm.
