W&L Football Falls to Hampden-Sydney, 35-22

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Hampden-Sydney broke open a 14-7 game with a pair of touchdowns in the final 1:44 of the first half en route to posting a 35-22 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC football action on Saturday afternoon at Everett Stadium.

The Generals (5-4, 3-3) fell behind 14-0 with 12:11 left in the first half on a pair of touchdown runs by junior quarterback Nash Nance.  W&L sliced it to a 14-7 game with 3:43 left in the half when first-year running back Marshall Hollerith (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) capped a 20-play, 79-yard drive that ate 9:21 off the clock by scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run.

Nance led the Tigers (7-2, 5-1) on a 5-play drive that covered 67 yards in 1:50, hitting junior wide receiver Holton Walker from 33 yards out for a 21-7 with 1:44 left in the half.

The Generals fumbled three plays into the next possession and Nance hooked up with Walker once again, this time from 22 yards out with 35 seconds remaining, and H-SC carried a 28-7 lead into the break.

Each team punted on its first drive of the third quarter, before the Generals engineered a 16-play drive that covered 67 yards and took 7:06 to complete.  Senior quarterback Nick Lombardo (Duluth, Ga./Peachtree Ridge) ended the drive with an 8-yard touchdown run.

The Tigers went 3-and-out on their next possession and W&L produced a 61-yard drive to cut it to a 28-20 game with 14:13 left in the game.  Hollerith finished the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run, his second touchdown of the game.  The PAT failed.

Hampden-Sydney retaliated with a 77-yard drive capped by Nance's third touchdown run, a 9-yard scamper on the eighth play of the drive that made it a 35-20 game.  W&L drove deep into H-SC territory with just over two minutes remaining, but the Tigers' defense held on downs and then the Tigers took an intentional safety on the next possession for the final score.

Hollerith led the W&L offense by rushing for 137 yards and two touchdowns on 37 carries.  Lombardo completed 3-of-7 passes for 78 yards and rushed 26 times for 70 yards and one touchdown.  Senior running back Luke Terna (Wheaton, Ill./Benet Academy) rushed five times for 50 yards and caught one pass for 33 yards.  Senior safety Walter Ramsey (Atlanta, Ga./Westmister) paced the defense with seven tackles.

Nance led the Hampden-Sydney offense by completing 17-of-23 passes for 202 yards and two touchdowns, and rushing 21 times for 88 yards and three touchdowns.  Senior running back Chris Shembo added 95 yards on 11 carries and Walker snared seven passes for 102 yards and two scores.  Senior linebacker Tyler Ikwild recorded a game-high 15 tackles to lead the Tigers' defense.

Washington and Lee will complete the 2013 campaign at Shenandoah on Saturday.  The Generals and Hornets will kick off at 1:00 pm.
