W&L Football Runs Past Sewanee, 35-24
LEXINGTON, Va. – First-year running back Marshall Hollerith (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) rushed for 151 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Washington and Lee football team to a 35-24 win over Sewanee at Wilson Field on Saturday afternoon.
As a team, the Generals rushed for 458 yards en route to defeating Sewanee for the ninth-straight time and improving their home winning streak to 16 games dating back to the 2010 season.
W&L (2-1) marched 80 yards on six plays on the opening possession of the ball game, taking a 7-0 lead on a 37-yard touchdown run by junior running back Austin Eisenhofer (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman).
Sewanee (1-3) retaliated with an 11-play, 73-yard drive that resulted in a 15-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Devante Jones (Cairo, Ga./Thomasville) to tie the score at 7-7 with 7:43 left in the first quarter.
W&L assumed a 14-7 lead with a 14-play, 72-yard drive, culminating in a 1-yard touchdown run by Hollerith at the 2:26 mark of the first quarter. The Tigers again tied it (14-14) when senior quarterback Curtis Johnson (Atlanta, Ga./Holy Spirit) found junior wide receiver Charlie Powell (Memphis, Tenn./Southwind) for a 40-yard touchdown at 10:37 of the second quarter. Hollerith scored his second touchdown of the day with a 3-yard run just 1:35 later to give W&L a 21-14 lead. Hollerith opened the drive with a 58-yard run to the Sewanee 17-yardline.
After each team went 3-and-out, the Tigers drove to the W&L 20-yardline before sophomore placekicker Callum Wishart booted a 37-yard field goal with 15 seconds left to make it a 21-17 game at the break.
After forcing a Tiger punt on the opening possession of the second half, the Generals went up 28-17 as sophomore running back Jimmy Moynahan (Sandwich, Mass./Boston College High) capped a 59-yard scoring drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. The Generals stopped Sewanee on a 4th-and-4 from their own 31-yardline on the next possession, and Hollerith scored his third touchdown on a 1-yard run on fourth down to give W&L a 35-17 lead with 2:28 left in the third quarter. The Tigers added a 36-yard touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Cody Daniel (Tracy, Calif./Tracy) with 3:37 left in the game for the final margin.
W&L totaled 459 yards of total offense in the contest led by Hollerith's effort. Senior quarterback Nick Lombardo (Duluth, Ga./Peachtree Ridge) rushed 21 times for 128 yards, while Eisenhofer tallied 81 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Sophomore running back Dillon Stanfield (Cincinnati, Ohio/Archbishop McNicholas) chipped in 62 yards on 11 carries, and Moynahan had 14 yards and a touchdown on three carries. Sophomore linebacker Jake Barr (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands Regional) posted a team-best 12 tackles and a sack.
Sewanee gained 294 total yards led by Daniel's 51 yards and one touchdown on seven carries. Johnson rushed for 20 yards and completed 2-of-3 passes for 63 yards and one touchdown. Sophomore defensive back Alex Kops recorded 12 tackles and one fumble recovery.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Guilford for a 7:00 pm contest.
