W&L Claims the 2013 ODAC Overall Sports Champion Cup
For the 11th-consecutive year, Washington and Lee University has claimed the Dan Wooldridge Overall Sports Champion Cup, as announced by the Old Dominion Athletic Conference on Friday. The Generals claimed both the Women’s Commissioner’s Cup and the Men’s Commissioner’s Cup on their way to the overall title.

Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that 179 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed winter term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.

Washington and Lee University is set to induct 49 members into the Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society at a convocation on March 14. Among the inductees are 13 student-athletes who have distinguished themselves in the classroom and on the playing fields.

W&L Football Falls at No. 7 Hobart in the NCAA Playoffs, 38-20
Hobart College controlled the ball for nearly 37 minutes and held Washington and Lee to a season-low 188 rushing yards in producing a 38-20 victory in the first round of the NCAA Division III football playoffs on Saturday afternoon at Boswell Field.

Washington and Lee and Hobart have never met on the gridion before this week. In fact, the Generals have never faced any of the eight teams that comprise the Liberty League. W&L is 3-6 all-time against teams from the State of New York and has never won a game played in The Empire State. The Generals’ last game in New York was a 23-8 loss at Alfred to begin the 2004 season.

Washington and Lee and Shenandoah have never met on the gridiron during the regular season. The teams aren’t entirely unfamiliar, however, as they have scrimmaged each other numerous times in recent memory during the preseason. The Hornets are in their first season as a member of the ODAC after playing the last 13 seasons as a member of the USA South Conference.

Senior Luke Heinsohn (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant) rushed for 192 yards and four touchdowns and kicked a game-winning 37-yard field goal to lift Washington and Lee to a 45-42 four-overtime victory over Hampden-Sydney on Saturday at Wilson Field.

Washington and Lee and Hampden-Sydney will be meeting for the 71st time, with the Tigers holding a 36-32-2 advantage in the all-time series that began during the 1899 season. H-SC has won four of the last five contests between the two teams, including a 42-35 win last season at Hampden-Sydney. The last eight encounters have been close affairs, however, with just one of those games being decided by more than 10 points.
