BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The D3Football.com website released its 2011 Preseason All-America team on Thursday evening and Washington and Lee senior offensive guard John Fitzgibbons (Martinsville, Va./Martinsville) was cited as a first team selection.
Fitzgibbons was among two guards and 26 players overall named to the first team, where he was joined by Hampden-Sydney senior placekicker David Prizzia.
A team captain for the 2011 campaign, Fitzgibbons has started all 31 games over his first three seasons as guard, tackle and center. Last season, he earned First Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference and First Team All-State honors while helping the Generals’ offense average 438.8 yards and 35.3 points per game. W&L set an ODAC record for rushing yards in a season (3,955) and broke the school’s season scoring record with 388 points.
Fitzgibbons blocked for three running backs that earned all-conference honors while the team averaged 6.1 yards per carry and ranked fifth in Division III in rushing yards per game (359.6).
Fitzgibbons is the second W&L player to earn preseason All-America accolades this summer, joining junior defensive back Jake Pelton (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello). Pelton was a first team selection by The Sporting News, which also ranked the Generals 19th in its preseason Division III poll.
Washington and Lee completed the 2010 season with an 8-3 overall record. The Generals went 6-0 in ODAC play, claiming the conference title and appearing in the NCAA Division III playoffs for the second time in five seasons.
