W&L Football Earns Two All-America Nods
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee football team had a pair of players honored on the D3Football.com 2011 All-America Teams on Friday evening.
Senior offensive lineman John Fitzgibbons (Martinsville, Va./Martinsville) was tabbed to the first team, and junior safety Jake Pelton (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) was an honorable mention selection.
Fitzgibbons, who was also a preseason First Team All-America choice by D3Football.com, Fitzgibbons started all 41 games of his Washington and Lee career, twice earning First Team All-ODAC honors. He was the leader of an offensive line that paved the way for an offense that ranked third nationally in total offense (491.8 ypg), fourth in rushing offense (331.8 ypg), sixth in passing efficiency (171.7 rating) and 17th in scoring (38.9 ppg) during the 2011 campaign.
Pelton, a preseason All-America choice by the Sporting News, finished second on the team and sixth in the ODAC in tackles with 76 stops. He also had seven pass breakups, three fumble recoveries and two interceptions en route to First Team All-ODAC honors and First Team All-South Region honors as well.
The Generals finished the 2011 season with an 8-2 overall record and a 5-1 mark in ODAC play. It was the program's first back-to-back seasons with at least eight wins since three straight from 1960-62.
