FOREST, Va. – Washington and Lee University claimed the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Players of the Week for football and swimming for the week ending October 23.
Senior quarterback Charlie Westfal (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) was named the ODAC Offensive Player of the Week for the second-straight week, while senior Jocelyn Cassada (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) was selected as the swimmer of the week.
Westfal helped guide the Generals' football team to a 52-42 win over Bridgewater on Saturday as the offense racked up 606 yards of total offense. Individually, Westfal completed 11-of-15 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed 16 times for 109 yards and two more touchdowns. W&L secured the win with 21 fourth quarter points as Westfal tallied 86 yards rushing and two rushing touchdowns in the decisive final 15 minutes.
With his 271 total yards, Westfal set a new school record for total offense with 6,508 yards, breaking the former total of 6,383 that had stood since 1999. He also ranks third all-time at W&L in touchdown passes (40), fifth in passing yards (4,367) and sixth in rushing yards (2,141). This season, Westfal has completed 62.2 percent of his passes for 1,141 yards and 10 touchdowns with just one interception. He has also rushed 108 times for a career-best 602 yards (sixth in the ODAC) and six more scores (tied for fifth in the ODAC).
Cassada led the Generals during a pair of meets over the weekend, producing seven first-place finishes and two second-place finishes.
In a 162-100 win over Mary Washington on Friday night, she touched first in the 100 back (1:00.20), 100 free (54.54), 200 medley relay (1:52.76) and 200 free relay (1:41.71). It was first-ever win over Mary Washington in program history.
On Saturday, Cassada aided the Generals in a first-place finish out of nine teams at the ODAC Relay event by swimming on three winning relay teams and two second-place relay squads. She was a part of the winning 3x50 back relay (1:27.18), the 200 medley relay (1:56.82) and the 8x25 free relay teams (1:30.28). She was also part of the runner-up 400 free relay (3:47.19) and 200 free relay (1:43.69) teams.
A three-time All-ODAC selection, Cassada holds W&L all-time Top 10 finishes in the 50 free, 100 free, 1000 free, 1650 free, 100 back and 200 back events.
The Washington and Lee football team returns to action on Friday as it hosts Catholic for a 7:00 pm contest. The W&L women's swimming team swims again on Saturday when it hosts Transylvania at 11:00 am.
