SALEM, Va. – The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its 2010 preseason coaches poll on Friday morning prior to the conference’s preseason conference calls. Washington and Lee was picked to finish fifth out of the seven teams in the conference.
Hampden-Sydney topped the poll with three first-place votes and 44 points, while Bridgewater is second with two first-place votes and 39 points. Emory & Henry is third with one first-place vote and 36 points and Randolph-Macon garnered one first-place nod and 29 points. W&L (22), Guilford (14) and Catholic (12) rounded out the polling.
Washington and Lee finished the 2009 season with a 4-6 overall record and a 1-5 mark in the ODAC. All six losses were by eight points or less and the Generals finished with more points (238) and they allowed (234) for the season.
A total of 12 starters and 32 letterwinners return to the field for the 2010 campaign led by senior Greg Kurkis and junior Charlie Westfal on offense and juniors Rob Look and John Kavanagh on defense.
A team captain, Kurkis will anchor an offensive line that finished second in the conference in rushing offense (201.4 ypg) last season. He is a three-time Second Team All-ODAC selection and the 2009 ODAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Westfal returns at quarterback after passing for 1,098 yards and nine touchdowns and rushing for 505 yards and six scores. The 2008 ODAC Rookie of the Year, Westfal has tallied 2,408 passing yards and 1,016 rushing yards over his first two seasons.
Look returns to the defense after receiving Second Team All-ODAC laurels a season ago. He finished second on the team with 72 tackles and logged 3.0 sacks for a Generals’ defense that led the ODAC in rush defense (109.3 ypg).
Also a team captain, Kavanagh moves from linebacker to safety this fall. Last season, he totaled 48 tackles and a pair of sacks and finished as the top kickoff returner in Division III with a 33.2 average per kickoff return.
Washington and Lee begins its 2010 campaign on Saturday, September 4 as it travels to Franklin & Marshall for a 1:00 pm contest.
