W&L Football Rolls Past Emory & Henry, 45-24

LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore running backs Luke Heinsohn (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant) and Brett Murray (Lookout Mountain, Tenn./Baylor) both rushed for over 100 yards as Washington and Lee rolled up 425 rushing yards in posting a 45-24 victory over Emory & Henry in ODAC football action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.

The Generals (3-2, 2-0) trailed 7-3 early in the second quarter when Murray jump-started the W&L rushing effort with a 52-yard touchdown run at the 12:41 mark for a 10-7 lead.  W&L added to the lead 6:37 later when junior quarterback Charlie Westfal (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) capped a 12-play, 86-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown pass to first-year tight end Alex Evans (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) for a 17-7 advantage.

Sophomore defensive back Jake Pelton (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) intercepted Emory & Henry (4-2, 0-2) junior quarterback Dustin Beck (Connellys Springs, N.C./East Burke) in the end zone on the ensuing drive and the Generals proceeded to march 80 yards on 11 plays to assume a 24-7 halftime lead on an 8-yard touchdown run by Westfal with just 19 seconds remaining in the half.

Washington and Lee upped its lead to 31-7 just 2:17 into the third quarter when Westfal found Murray for a 17-yard touchdown pass.  The Wasps responded with 10-straight third quarter points to make it a 31-17 game with just under five minutes remaining in the penultimate quarter, but the Generals scored two more rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter, one by Heinsohn (1 yard) and another by Murray (6 yards) to secure the homecoming victory.

W&L amassed 491 yards of total offense and rushed for more than 400 yards for the third time this season.  Heinsohn finished with 130 yards and one touchdown on 26 carries, while Murray totaled 121 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries.  He also caught two passes for 22 yards in producing 225 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns.  Junior running back Harrison Hudson (Salem, Va./Salem) registered 95 yards on 11 carries and Westfal rushed eight times for 65 yards and one touchdown.  He also completed 6-of-9 passes for 66 yards and two touchdowns.  Sophomore linebacker Doug Fraser (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) paced the defense with 10 tackles.  Pelton added eight stops, two pass breakups and one interception.

Beck led the Wasps by completing 25-of-37 passes for 255 yards, but was intercepted twice.  Senior running back Caleb Jennings (Cedar Bluff, Va./Richlands) rushed nine times for 69 yards and one touchdown, but was injured late in the first half and played sparingly in the second half.  Junior wide receiver Preston Jennings (Banner Elk, N.C./Avery County) caught six passes for 77 yards and junior defensive end Daniel Preston (Kingsport, Tenn./Dobyns Bennett) totaled a game-high 14 tackles to lead the E&H defense.
