SALEM, Va. – Washington and Lee swept the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Football Player of the Week Awards for the week ending October 3.
Sophomore running back Luke Heinsohn (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant) was tabbed the offensive player of the week, while sophomore defensive back Jake Pelton (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) was selected as the defensive player of the week. The duo helped lead the Generals to a 55-29 win over Guilford in the team's ODAC-opener on Saturday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C. The 55 points were the most points scored by a W&L team in 48 years.
Heinsohn keyed the offense that rushed for 463 yards on the afternoon, the third-highest total in ODAC history. He toted the ball 20 times for 223 yards and one touchdown in the game. His 223 yards represented the fourth-highest rushing total in school history, while his 11.1 yards per carry average was the fifth-best total for a single-game. Heinsohn has now rushed for 100 or more yards in three-straight games and his 132.5 yards per game average ranks second in the ODAC this season. For the season, he has carried 61 times for 530 yards and three touchdowns (8.7 average per carry).
Pelton paced the defense in the win over Guilford by totaling a team-high eight tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery. In all, the Generals' defense forced five turnovers on the day, the most by a W&L defense in five years. For the year, Pelton ranks second on the team in tackles with 27 stops. He also has one interception, one fumble recovery, one pass breakup and a half sack.
Washington and Lee is currently 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the ODAC. The Generals will take the field again on Saturday as they host Emory & Henry for a 1:30 pm contest.
