W&L Football Earns Preseason Recognition
The Sporting News 2011 College Football Preview issue has hit the newsstands and Washington and Lee is ranked in the publication’s Preseason Division III Top 25 Poll. Additionally, junior defensive back Jake Pelton (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) was cited as a member of the Preseason All-America team.

The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) announced the 2011 winners of the conference’s top scholar-athlete awards, the Harry G. "Doc" Jopson Award (Male) and Majorie Berkley Award (Female).

Mathews and Kurkis Highlight Major Award Winners at W&L
Washington and Lee University held its annual Athletic Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, May 17 at Lee Chapel. Headlining the award winners were senior field hockey/lacrosse player Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) and senior football player Greg Kurkis (Roswell, Ga./Westminster), who were selected as the “Pres” Brown Outstanding Senior Female and Male Athletes of the Year as voted on by members of the department.

The Old Dominion Athletic Conference has announced that Washington and Lee University has claimed the 2011 Dan Wooldridge Overall Sports Champion Cup for the eighth-straight year.

W&L Announces 2011 Athletic Hall of Fame Class
Washington and Lee University has announced the 24th class to be inducted into its Athletic Hall of Fame. The class includes former golfer Jack Vardaman ’62, former football player Kevin Weaver ’87, former women’s lacrosse player Brooke Glenn Mullin ’97 and former men’s soccer player Mikel Parker ’99.

Numerous W&L Students Earn Winter Scholar-Athlete Awards
Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that 173 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed winter term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has announced that Washington and Lee senior football player Greg Kurkis is one of 29 Division I, II and III athletes selected to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship for participation in a fall sport.

Washington and Lee senior offensive lineman Greg Kurkis (Roswell, Ga./Westminster) has been named to the ESPN Academic All-America football team as selected and announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Tuesday.

The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) released its 2010 ESPN The Magazine College Division Academic All-District III squad on Thursday afternoon and Washington and Lee had five players selected to the 21-member team.

Washington and Lee Football - Hampden-Sydney Game Notes
Washington and Lee and Hampden-Sydney will be meeting for the 69th time, with the Tigers holding a 35-31-2 advantage in the all-time series that began during the 1899 season. W&L has played the Tigers more often than any other opponent in program history and the two teams have met every season since 1955 making it the Generals’ longest standing rivalry. The Tigers have claimed three-straight wins in the series and six of the last eight meetings overall against W&L, including a 38-31 win last season in Hampden-Sydney, Va. The last three meetings have all been high-scoring encounters with an average of 74.7 points scored between the two teams per game. The average margin of victory has been just 6.7 points per game.

W&L Football Shreds Record Books in a 49-14 Win at Catholic
The Washington and Lee football team amassed a season-best 604 yards of total offense and set new Old Dominion Athletic Conference records for rushing yards in a game (496), rushing yards in a season (3,008) and rushing touchdowns in a season (33) in posting a 49-14 victory at Catholic University on Friday evening.

Washington and Lee Football - Catholic Game Notes
Washington and Lee and Catholic will be meeting for the 15th time, with the Generals holding an 11-3 advantage in the all-time series that began during the 1981 season. The Generals have won six of the last seven encounters, including a 28-14 win last season in Lexington. Catholic won the last meeting between the two in Washington, D.C., by a 48-29 count in 2008. The W&L offense has experienced a tremendous amount of success against the Cardinals over the last six meetings, averaging 405.3 yards and 27.0 points per game over that stretch. The Generals have also run the ball well against CUA, averaging 204.8 rushing yards per game over the last six contests.

R-MC has won two of the last three meetings, including a 21-13 victory last season in Ashland, Va. However, W&L has won four of the last six meetings, including five-straight wins over the Yellow Jackets in Lexington dating back to 2002. In those five games at Wilson Field, Randolph-Macon has scored a total of just 35 points for an average of only 7.0 points per game. Washington and Lee Football - Emory & Henry Game Notes
Washington and Lee and Emory & Henry will be meeting for the 40th time, with the Wasps holding a 28-11 advantage in the all-time series that began during the 1921 season. The Wasps have won the last two encounters, including a 23-16 victory last season in Emory, Va. The last three games have all been determined by a single score, with Emory taking two of those three contests. The series has featured several long winning streaks, including a string of 19-straight wins by E&H from 1983-2001. The Wasps also had a six-game winning streak from 1962-1979, while W&L notched four-straight wins from 2004-07. In last season’s meeting, Caleb Jennings ran for 188 yards to lead E&H to the win.

The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) recently announced its 2009-10 Academic All-State team. The team features 137 student-athletes across all NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and Independent schools in the Commonwealth.

Washington and Lee Football - Franklin & Marshall Game Notes
W&L and Franklin & Marshall will be meeting for the 11th time, with the series tied at five games apiece. The Diplomats have won two-straight in the series, including a 29-27 victory last season at Wilson Field. F&M has taken three of the four games since the series was re-kindled in 2006 and W&L has not defeated the Diplomats in Lancaster since a 28-6 victory over F&M during the 1963 season. Last year’s 29-27 game was the highest-scoring game in the series since a 55-14 W&L win during the 1962 campaign.

Washington and Lee Head Football Coach Frank Miriello feels good about where his team is positioned heading into the 2010 season. The Generals won just three games on the field last fall (a fourth was later gained via forfeit), but Miriello knows that his team was not far from a winning season considering that all seven losses were by a single score and that W&L actually outscored its opponents for the season (238-234).

The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its 2010 preseason coaches poll on Friday morning prior to the conference’s preseason conference calls. Washington and Lee was picked to finish fifth out of the seven teams in the conference.
