LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee senior football players Charlie Craigle (Greenville, N.C./Rose) and Matt Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spaulding) have both been selected to participate in the inaugural Division III Football Senior Classic.
The Classic will be held on Sat., Dec. 5 at Salem Stadium in Salem, Va., the site of the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl. It will showcase 90 of the nation's top Division III student-athletes, representing the 238 NCAA Division III football sponsoring schools.
Craigle was a three-year starter on the Generals offensive line, earning three letters and serving as a team captain for the 2009 season. A First Team All-ODAC and First Team All-State selection following the 2008 campaign, Craigle helped the Generals’ offense average 201.4 rushing yards and 23.8 points per game this fall.
Cassilly was also a three-year starter and a team captain. He earned four letters for the Generals’ defense as a linebacker for his first three seasons and as a defensive end this season. Cassilly finished his senior campaign third on the team in tackles with 65 total stops. He also led the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with 20.5 tackles for a loss of 103 yards. His 10.0 sacks (-70 yds.) ranked second in the conference and he also tallied two interceptions, forced three fumbles and had two fumble recoveries. Cassilly returned one of his interceptions for a touchdown. He finished his career with 171 tackles, including 33.5 tackles for a loss. He also notched 15.0 career sacks, good for 11th on the school’s all-time list.
Washington and Lee completed the 2009 season with a 3-7 overall record and a 2-4 record in the ODAC. The Generals seven losses were each by a total of eight points or less for an average margin of 5.0 points per game.
