LEXINGTON, Va. — Despite a rally in the ninth inning, the Washington and Lee baseball team fell to Bridgewater, 10-9, on Wednesday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
Trailing 10-7 entering the final frame, the Generals (13-8, 6-6 ODAC) put two of the first three runners on base with singles. The Eagles (16-7, 7-4 ODAC) then brought senior Kyle Henshaw (New Kent, Va./New Kent) in to try and close out the contest. He recorded the second out of the inning when he forced junior left fielder Drew Weprinsky (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) into a fielder's choice.
With two on and two out, Henshaw hit senior first baseman Josh Josephson (Boca Raton, Fla./American Heritage) to load the bases. Senior designated hitter Kyle Witty (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) ripped the next pitch into center field to plate sophomore catcher Andrew Head (Edmond, Okla./Bishop McGuinness) and Weprinsky (10-9), but on the play, Josephson took too wide of a turn off second and was tagged out to end the contest.
Senior Tyler Slanovec (Easton, Pa./Freedom) earned the victory for Bridgewater to improve to 1-0. He pitched 1.1 innings of relief, giving up three earned runs on three hits. Henshaw registered his second save of the season.
Junior Andrew Lamb (Lexington, S.C./Hammond) suffered the loss for the Blue and White to fall to 0-2. He allowed five runs (three earned) in 0.1 innings. He gave up three hits, walked a batter and hit one more. First-year Tom Concklin (Hinsdale, Ill/Hinsdale) started for the Generals, pitching 6.0 innings. He gave up two earned runs on seven hits, with three strikeouts.
With the contest tied 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, senior center fielder Keegan Dolan (Bethesda, Md./Landon) hit a two-out three-run home run to give W&L a 5-2 advantage. It marked the seventh homer of the year for Dolan.
The Eagles responded in the top of the seventh with five runs to take a 7-5 lead they would not relinquish. Over the course of the inning, the Generals walked two batters, hit another, recorded a passed ball and had an error.
Dolan finished the day 3-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored. Weprinsky went 4-for-5 with a RBI and three runs scored.
Senior shortstop Zach Hynes (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead Bridgewater, while sophomore third baseman Justin Peatock (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) had two hits in three at bats with two runs and a RBI.
The Generals will take a break for finals and return to action on Saturday, April 12, for a doubleheader at Hampden-Sydney.
