LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team gave up six runs with two-outs on Thursday en route to a 7-4 loss to Eastern Mennonite at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
After the Royals (13-12, 1-8 ODAC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Generals (12-7, 5-5 ODAC) responded with two (2-1) in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore catcher Riley Stout (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) lined a one-run single up the middle, and then later scored in the inning on an error by first-year right fielder Ryan Hedrick (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby).
EMU regained the lead in the top of the third on some timely hitting and some miscues by the Blue and White defense. After sophomore Kyle Tipping (Green Lane, Pa./The Hill School) forced two groundouts to start the inning, the next two batters reached on a walk and a single.
First-year left fielder Kyle Mathews (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) singled to right to plate junior third baseman Brandon Carroll (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford), and Hendrick came home on an error by sophomore right fielder Luke Myer (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy). Following a second W&L miscue, first-year Kyle Salladay (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) hit a RBI single into center field to give the Royals a 4-2 advantage.
Stout cut the margin to one (4-3) in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly, but EMU added two more two-out tallies in the top of the fifth to take a 6-3 lead.
The Royals added an insurance run in the top of the eight when senior second baseman Ryan McAlister (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) scored with two outs on a throwing error by first-year third baseman Colton Campbell (Deatsville, Ala./Holtville).
W&L loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the eight, but pinch hitter Josh Josephson (Boca Raton, Fla./American Heritage) struck out to end the inning. In the ninth, Stout notched his third RBI of the contest on a single through the left side of the infield. With two on and two out, Salladay struck out the only batter he faced to end the game and register his third save of the year.
Sophomore Aaron Hooven (Carroll, Va./Carroll) threw 4.2 innings of relief to earn the victory for EMU and improve to 2-0. He gave up one run on six hits, while registering five strikeouts.
Tipping (2-2) took the loss for the Generals. He pitched 5.0 innings and allowed six runs (four earned) on 10 hits, while striking out two.
Stout finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored to lead the Blue and White. Campbell notched three hits in five at bats and scored three runs. Along with the save, Salladay went 3-for-5 with two RBI for the Royals.
W&L returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Emory & Henry for a doubleheader, starting at 12:00 pm.
