SALEM, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team held Roanoke scoreless in two games on Saturday, as the Generals (12-6, 5-4 ODAC) swept the Maroons (5-11, 1-7 ODAC) in an ODAC doubleheader.
In the first game, senior Jake Rudolph (Cordova, Tenn./Memphis University School) threw 8.0 scoreless innings, and junior Cory Smith (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) registered the final three outs in a 3-0 victory. W&L won the second game, 7-0, as first-year Tom Concklin (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and sophomore Andrew Lamb (Lexington, S.C./Hammond) combined for the shutout.
In his eight innings in game one, Rudolph (3-2) scattered seven hits to pick up his third victory of the season. He also had two strikeouts and issued two walks. Smith gave up one hit in the ninth, while striking out one, to earn his second save of the year. He also closed out Friday's win over Bridgewater.
The Blue and White took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a solo home run by sophomore catcher Riley Stout (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run). It marked his second of the season.
The Generals extended the lead to 2-0 in the top of the third on a throwing error by the shortstop, which allowed first-year third baseman Colton Campbell (Deatsville, Ala./Holtville) to score. W&L registered its final run in the top of the sixth inning on a RBI single by junior left fielder Drew Weprinsky (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster).
Junior Cameron Holshouser (0-3) pitched a complete game for Roanoke and took the loss. He gave up all three runs (two earned) on 10 hits, while striking out nine.
Concklin (2-1) pitched 7.2 innings of game two on his way to his second victory of the season. He allowed just six hits and one walk, while striking out four. Lamb pitched the final 1.1 innings and gave up just one hit.
The Generals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a one-run double by Campbell and a RBI double down the left field line by Stout. Stout added to the lead (3-0) in the third on a RBI groundout, which plated Campbell.
A two-run double by sophomore right fielder Luke Myer (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) in the top of the fifth pushed the W&L lead to 5-0. The Blue and White tallied its final two runs in the top of the ninth on a solo homer by senior center fielder Keegan Dolan (Bethesda, Md./Landon), and Campbell scored on an error.
Senior Jacob McMillan (1-2) suffered the loss for the Maroons. He pitched 4.1 innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits, while recording five strikeouts.
The Generals return to action on Tuesday when they host Southern Virginia at 3:00 pm.
