R-MC Holds W&L Baseball to One Run in Doubleheader Sweep
LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team stranded 26 runners and gave up four unearned runs, as Randolph-Macon swept the Generals in a doubleheader on Sunday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
The Yellow Jackets (7-6, 2-2 ODAC) used three pitchers to secure a 3-0 shutout in the opener, and then notched a four-run third inning to take the second contest, 5-1.
Despite totaling 19 hits and drawing seven walks over the two games, the Generals (8-4, 2-2 ODAC) scored only one run in 18 innings. The losses also ended W&L's six-game winning streak.
In the first game, the Blue and White loaded the bases three times (in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings) and failed to get a run across in each of the opportunities. R-MC took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. With one on and two out, sophomore designated hitter Mitchell Keeler (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) scored from first on a single to right when sophomore Luke Myer (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) overran the ball to allow Keeler to reach home.
The Yellow Jackets added their second run in the fifth on a RBI single by first-year outfielder Blake Saathoff (Catonsville, Md./Archbishop Spaldin), and tallied their final score in the eighth on a one-run double by sophomore first baseman Michael Kroll (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate).
Senior Jake Rudolph (Cordova, Tenn./Memphis University School) took the loss for W&L, despite only allowing two runs (one earned) in 7.0 innings. He dropped to 2-2 on the year, after giving up five hits and striking out three.
Sophomore Daniel Byrd (Chesterfield, Va./Cosby) threw 5.0 innings for R-MC to improve to 2-1 on the season. He did not allow a run on five hits and struck out four. Junior J.T. Williamson (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) got the final two outs of the contest to record his first save of the season.
The Generals took a 1-0 lead in the game two of the twinbill in the bottom of the second inning. Junior second baseman Nick Biumi (Cummings, Ga./Lambert) drew a bases-loaded one-out walk to tally W&L's first and only run of the day. R-MC starter James Walsh (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) recorded the next two outs with the bags full to get out of the jam.
The Yellow Jackets scored the final five runs of the contest, including four in the top of the third. After R-MC tied the game, 1-1, senior Nate Plein (El Cajon, Calif./St. Augustine) notched the first two outs, and looked like he was going to get out of the inning without allowing any more damage.
An error by junior shortstop Taylor Rowe (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) on the next play extended the inning, and Randolph-Macon took advantage with two hits to score three more runs.
Walsh earned the victory for the Yellow Jackets, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing one run on seven hits. The R-MC bullpen threw the final four innings without giving up a run.
Plein (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season, after going 6.0 innings. He allowed four runs (one earned) on five hits and struck out two.
The shutout in the first game was the first time the Generals have not scored a run in a contest since losing at Randolph-Macon, 5-0, on March 10, 2013.
Over the course of the doubleheader, Rowe tallied five hits (5-for-10) and first-year third baseman Colton Campbell (Deatsville, Ala./Holtville) had three (3-for-8).
W&L returns to action on Monday when it hosts Marymount at 3:00 pm.
