LYNCHBURG, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team scored 23 runs on Sunday in a doubleheader sweep at Lynchburg.
The Generals (8-2, 2-0 ODAC) needed 13 innings in the opener, but defeated the Hornets (7-3, 0-2 ODAC), 11-6, and then used the momentum to cruise to a 12-4 victory in game two.
W&L trailed in the first game, 5-1, but scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 6-5 advantage. During the rally, sophomore catcher Riley Stout (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) hit a two-run double, and senior designated hitter Kyle Witty (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) recorded a two-RBI single.
Lynchburg tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning (6-6) on a RBI single by junior catcher Rob Tomasulo, but neither team scored in the next three frames, which forced extra innings.
Both teams failed to score in the 10th, 11th or 12th, but the Blue and White took control of the contest in the top of the 13th. First-year third baseman Colton Campbell (Deatsville, Ala./Holtville) led off the inning with a single up the middle. After a sacrifice bunt by Witty, junior second baseman Nick Biumi (Cummings, Ga./Lambert) singled to right to put runners on first and third.
Senior center fielder Keegan Dolan (Bethesda, Md./Landon) brought both runners home with a double to left field. Junior shortstop Taylor Rowe (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) then reached on an error by the shortstop, and junior left fielder Drew Weprinsky (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) gave W&L an 11-6 lead with a homer to right field. It marked the first collegiate home run for Weprinsky.
The Generals' bullpen allowed the offense to win the game in extra innings by giving up just one earned run in 10.0 innings. Junior Cory Smith (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) pitched the final three innings to record his first victory of the year. He did not give up a run and scattered three hits. Sophomore Kyle Tipping (Green Lane, Pa./The Hill School) threw 4.0 innings of relief without allowing a run.
Junior Brandon Miller (2-2) pitched the final 8.1 innings for the Hornets to take the loss. He did not allow a run in his first 7.1 innings before giving up five runs (four earned) in the 13th.
W&L scored the first two runs of the second game in the second inning. Sophomore right fielder Luke Myer (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) scored on an error, and then senior first baseman Josh Josephson (Boca Raton, Fla./American Heritage) hit a RBI double to center to make it 2-0.
A home run by junior designated hitter Jay Kenyon in the bottom of the frame cut the lead to one, 2-1, but the Generals scored the next seven runs to take a 9-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Rowe provided most of the W&L offense, hitting a two-run double and a two-run homer. He finished the game 3-for-5 with five RBI and three runs.
Each team scored three runs the rest of the way to reach the final margin. Senior Nate Plein (El Cajon, Calif./St. Augustine) pitched 6.0 innings and gave up two runs to improve to 3-0 this year. He also recorded four strikeouts.
First-year Tom Concklin (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) threw the final 2.0 innings and did not allow a run. He has now pitched 9.1 innings of shutout baseball to begin his collegiate career. Senior Zac Patrick (2-1) took the loss for Lynchburg, as he gave up nine runs (seven earned) in 6.0 innings.
Over the course of the doubleheader, Dolan went 6-for-13 with two doubles, three runs and three RBI. Rowe finished 4-for-11 with six RBI, five runs, a double and a home run.
This marks the second straight year the Generals have swept the Hornets during the regular season. The last time W&L played a 13-inning game was last season when it lost at Randolph-Macon, 3-2, on March 10.
The Generals are scheduled to return to the field on Wednesday when they host Bridgewater at 3:00 pm.
