LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior Nate Plein (El Cajon, Calif./St. Augustine) just missed throwing a perfect game, and the Washington and Lee baseball team scored a combined 27 runs in a doubleheader sweep of UMaine-Presque Isle on Saturday.
Plein pitched a complete-game shutout as the Generals (4-2) took the opener, 12-0, while nine different batters recorded a RBI in a 15-0 victory in game two.
In the first game, Plein faced the minimum through the first six innings. Senior second baseman Justin Bergeron (Tiverton, R.I.) recorded the Owls' (0-8) first hit of the game when he led off the seventh with a looping double that landed just inside the right-field line. Plein would hit a batter later in the frame, but forced senior third baseman Cam Morrell (Harpswell, Maine) to foul out to secure the shutout.
It marked the first shutout of Plein's career and improved his record on the season to 2-0. Along with allowing just one hit, he also struck out three. Senior Jordan Perry (Baileyville, Maine) threw all six innings for UMPI to fall to 0-2 on the year. He gave up 12 runs (11 earned) on 12 hits.
The Blue and White held a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, and then broke the game open with eight runs in the frame to reach the final margin. First-year first baseman Ryan Weston (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) roped a three-run home run off the left-field foul pole during the rally, and senior outfielder Keegan Dolan (Bethesda, Md./Landon) launched a grand slam over the fence in left center.
In the second game, W&L used 13 position players and four pitchers on its way to the victory. After failing to score in the opening inning, the Generals notched nine runs in the second.
Dolan, junior shortstop Taylor Rowe (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park), junior outfielder Drew Weprinsky (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) and first-year catcher Cory Paton (Ashton, Md./St. Johns College) each registered a RBI during the rally. First-year third baseman Colton Campbell (Deatsville, Ala./Holtville) capped the spurt with a three-run double to left field.
W&L added two in the third and four in the fourth to secure the 15-0 victory. First-year Tom Concklin (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) pitched four shutout innings to notch his first collegiate victory. He allowed just two hits and one walk, while striking out three.
First-year John Struckell (Dallas, Texas/Jesuit College Prep), junior Drew Shott (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep) and senior Mike Savas (Bernardsville, N.J./Delbarton) each threw an inning of relief to preserve the shutout.
Junior Ghazaleh Sailers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) took the loss for the Owls, pitching 1.0 inning before being forced out of the second without recording an out. She allowed eight runs (five earned) on four hits and three walks.
Over the course of the doubleheader, the Blue and White totaled 26 hits, 26 RBI, five doubles and two home runs.
The Generals host SUNY Oneonta on Sunday at 12:00 pm.
