Generals Knocked Out of ODAC Tourney in Extra Innings

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Hampden-Sydney scored two runs in the bottom of the 11th inning to knock the Washington and Lee baseball team out of the ODAC Tournament, 6-5, on Saturday at City Stadium.

The Generals (19-17) took the lead in the top of the 11th, 5-4. Junior Keegan Dolan (Bethesda, Md./Landon) walked and then stole second with two outs. Senior Alex Mait (Chesterfield, Va./Clever Hill) brought Dolan home on a hit and run with a single to left.

In the bottom of the inning, the first three batters reached for the Tigers (23-16-1), and then junior Jake Rudolph (Cordova, Tenn./Memphis University School) relieved sophomore Cory Smith (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley). Rudolph walked in the tying run, 5-5, on four pitches and then Beau Flinchum lined a walk-off single to right center to give H-SC the 6-5 win.

Billy Nixon recorded the final out of the 11th to earn the victory for the Tigers. He improved to 3-0 on the season. Smith pitched 5.0 innings of relief for W&L and took the loss. He allowed two runs on four hits with a strikeout. He worked out of a bases loaded jam in the 10th to extend the game to the 11th.

The Blue and White entered the top of the ninth trailing, 4-3. Senior Joe Scalzo (Ridgefield, Conn./Brunswick) ripped a one-out double down the left field line. He then moved to third on a groundout. With two strikes on pinch hitter Josh Josephson (Boca Raton, Fla./American Heritage), Tigers' closer Luke Rabiej threw a pitch that got past the catcher and Scalzo came home to tie the game on the wild pitch.

Both sophomore Drew Weprinsky (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) and senior Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) extended their hitting streaks. With his two hits, Weprinsky ends the season on a 28-game hitting streak, and Stutts ends his career on a 23-game hitting streak.

The Generals struck first as they loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the first. Following back-to-back hits by Weprinsky and senior Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill./Loyola), Dolan worked a walk. Scalzo then lined a single to left to score Weprinksy, but Maragos was thrown out at home to end the inning.

The Tigers evened the score, 1-1, in the bottom of the first on a RBI single through the left side by Flinchum. H-SC took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the third on a one-run single by junior Nathan Chamberlain.

W&L came back with two in the fourth (3-2). Maragos scored on a two-base error by the center fielder, and then Scalzo hit a sacrifice fly to plate Dolan. Hampden-Sydney responded in the bottom of the inning when senior Patrick Kuhns singled up the middle to plate junior Andrew Tucker (3-3).

H-SC broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fifth. After a walk and a fielding error by the third baseman, Chamberlain laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third with one out. Tucker hit a ball off the end of the bat, but the ball got under pitcher Nate Plein's (El Cajon, Calif./St. Augustine) glove, which allowed a run, 4-3, to score.

The loss marked the final game for the Washington and Lee baseball team in 2013. The Generals graduate 10 seniors from this year's squad.
