HARRISONBURG, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team scored six runs in the top of the ninth inning to earn an 11-5 victory at Eastern Mennonite on Thursday.
The two teams entered the final inning tied, 5-5, before the Generals' (16-15, 9-9 ODAC) six-run rally. The win also ended a four-game losing streak for W&L.
Sophomore Taylor Rowe (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) led off the ninth with a single to left field. Sophomore Nick Biumi (Cummings, Ga./Lambert) pinch ran for Rowe, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day).
After a walk to senior Will Salley (Augusta, Ga./Westside), sophomore Drew Weprinsky (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) gave the Blue and White a one-run lead, 6-5, on a single to right field. The single also extended Weprinsky's hitting streak to 23 games. Following a fly out, junior Keegan Dolan (Bethesda, Md./Landon) hit a three-run home run to break the game open, 9-5. It was Dolan's fifth home run of the season and the team's 34th.
The Royals (15-22, 4-14 ODAC) made a pitching change, but senior Alex Mait (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill) kept the inning alive with a double to center. Mait scored on a triple from senior Joe Scalzo (Ridgefield, Conn./Brunswick), and then Scalzo came home on a balk.
Senior Ian Shaw (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) threw his first complete game of the season to earn his sixth win of the year. He gave up five runs (four earned), struck out six and allowed 12 hits.
