LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team held Roanoke to six runs in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. While the pitching staff stymied the Maroons (9-14, 2-6 ODAC), the Generals' (12-9, 6-3 ODAC) offense powered the team to a 10-4 victory in game one and an 8-2 win in the second game.
Senior Ian Shaw (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) nearly pitched a complete game in the opener, going 8.2 innings. He allowed four unearned runs with only one walk to improve to 4-1 on the season. Junior Jake Rudolph (Cordova, Tenn./Memphis University School) came on and got final out.
The offense tallied five runs in the first three innings, and then scored the final five in the seventh and the eighth. In opening inning, senior Will Salley (Augusta, Ga./Westside) plated the first tally on a wild pitch, and then junior Keegan Dolan (Bethesda, Md./Landon) doubled in a run. Senior Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) pushed the lead to 4-1 on a two-run home run to left, which marked the sixth of the year for the shortstop.
After adding a score in the third, the Blue and White went scoreless the next three innings. In the seventh, Dolan registered his second RBI double to stretch the advantage to 6-1. Two errors and a passed ball allowed the Generals to plate four runs in the bottom of the eighth (10-2).
Roanoke scored its final two runs (both unearned) in the ninth on a RBI double by Cam Cassady (Vienna, Va./James Madison), and a one-run single by Bradley Mattox (Vinton, Va./William Byrd). Cameron Holshouser (Salem, Va./Glenvar) suffered the loss for the Maroons, after pitching just 3.0 innings. He gave up five runs on four hits and walked three to fall to 2-4.
In game two, the two squads were tied 1-1 through the first five and a half innings. The Generals broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth. After a hit by pitch and a walk, W&L executed a hit and run with pinch hitter Joe Scalzo (Ridgefield, Conn./Brunswick) knocking a single through the right side to score Dolan (2-1).
Following a sacrifice bunt, Stutts was intentionally walked to load the bases. Salley then walked to force in a run and the Maroons brought in Jacob McMillan (Vinton, Va./William Byrd) to try and stop the rally. Sophomore Drew Weprinsky (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) had other ideas, as he doubled to left to drive in two more to push the lead to 5-1.
The Generals tallied their final tallies of the game in the eighth on a RBI single by Weprinsky, and a two-RBI double by Dolan to reach the final margin of 8-2.
Junior Nate Plein (El Cajon, Calif./St. Augustine) started the game and went 6.0 innings. He struck out four, while allowing one run to improve to 4-1. Tyler Grouten (Avon, Conn./Avon) took the loss to fall to 2-4. He gave up five runs on six hits in 5.1 innings.
The Generals return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Bridgewater for a 4:00 pm game.
