W&L Baseball Splits Twinbill with Alvernia
LEXINGTON, Va. — The Washington and Lee baseball team scored 10 runs against Alvernia on Sunday on its way to a split of a doubleheader at Cap'n Dick Smith Field. The Crusaders (1-1) edged out a 5-4 victory in the first game, but the Generals scored six runs in the second to earn a 6-1 win.
In the second game, junior outfielder Keegan Dolan (Bethesda, Md./Landon) went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a stolen base to lead W&L. Senior Eric Wisotsky (West Windsor, N.J./Plainsboro North) earned the win for his second of the season (2-0). He pitched 4.0 innings, while allowing only one earned run and striking out two.
Sophomore Cory Smith (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) pitched 3.0 scoreless innings of relief to record his first save of the year. He didn't allow a hit and struck out three.
The Generals took the early lead in the game when senior shortstop Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) hit a solo home run down the left field line. In the second inning, Dolan hit a two-run double to give W&L a 3-0 lead. The Crusaders scored their lone tally of the game on a RBI double by senior center fielder Leon Stimpson (Philadelphia, Pa./Malvern Prep) in the third.
The Blue and White added two more in the fifth (5-1) with a sacrifice fly by sophomore designated hitter Drew Weprinsky (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) and a RBI single by senior third baseman Chris Nault (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood). The Generals put their final tally on the board in the sixth on a RBI single by Dolan.
In the first game of the doubleheader, W&L plated two runs in the first inning. Senior designated hitter Mike Savas (Bernardsville, N.J./Delbarton) scored on an error by shortstop Richie Ricciardi (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan), and junior first baseman Josh Josephson (Boca Raton, Fla./American Heritage) hit a sacrifice fly to center to give the home team a 2-0 lead.
Alvernia tied the game in the top of the second when senior left fielder Cody Younker (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) hit a two-run homer over the left field wall. W&L regained the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the inning when Weprinsky scored on an error by Ricciardi.
Once again the Crusaders had an answer when junior right fielder Jeremy Lewis (Bronx, N.Y./Mt. St. Michael Academy) connected on a three-run home run in the top of the fourth to take a 5-3 advantage. W&L cut the deficit in half, 5-4, on a RBI single by Nault in the fourth, but could not score the tying run the rest of the way.
Senior Cody Smith (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) earned the victory for Alvernia, after throwing 2.2 inning of scoreless relief. Sophomore Kevin Becker-Menditto (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) pitched a perfect seventh for the save.
Junior Nate Plein (El Cajon, Calif./St. Augustine) took the loss for the Generals to fall to 1-1 on the year. He pitched 4.0 innings and allowed all five runs. Junior Jake Rudolph (Cordova, Tenn./Memphis University School) threw 3.0 innings of relief without giving up a run.
The Generals next play at home on Tuesday when they host Mary Washington at 3:00 pm.
