W&L's Three-Run Ninth Inning Leads to 6-4 Win at Emory
ATLANTA, Ga. – With three runs in the ninth inning, the Washington and Lee baseball team won at Emory, 6-4, on Tuesday. It marked the first victory for the Generals (4-1) in the all-time series with the Eagles (2-1). Emory had won the previous 13 meetings.
The two teams entered the top of the ninth inning tied, 3-3. Senior catcher Luke Deary (Carlisle, Mass./Groton School) and sophomore pinch hitter Philip Anderson (Atherton, Calif./Menlo) each reached base, after being plunked by right-hander Graham Bloomsmith. Senior Mike Savas (Bernardsville, N.J./Delbarton) came on as a pinch hitter, and laid down a sacrifice bunt. Bloomsmith fielded the ball, but a wild throw allowed Deary to score, Anderson to advance to third and Savas to reach on an error.
Senior third baseman Chris Nault (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) then came to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to center, which scored Anderson to push the lead to 5-3.
After an intentional walk to senior shortstop Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day), Bloomsmith was lifted for junior Robert Gross. Gross walked the next two batters to force in Savas for the Generals' final run (6-3).
Emory tried to come back in the bottom of the ninth. The Eagles scored on a RBI groundout by junior third baseman Ryan Toscano to cut the lead to two (6-4), and then loaded the bases with two outs on a walk to right fielder Brandon Hannon. Junior Jake Rudolph (Cordova, Tenn./Memphis University School) came on in relief of senior Eric Wisotsky (West Windsor, N.J./Plainsboro North), and forced junior catcher Jared Welch to foul out to third on a 1-0 pitch to end the game.
It marked the first victory of the year for Wisotsky. He pitched 3.0 innings, while allowing two runs on three hits. Rudolph recorded his first save in his second appearance of the season. Bloomsmith took the loss to fall to 1-1 on the year.
Junior Nate Plein (El Cajon, Calif./St. Augustine) started the game for W&L, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out four.
The Generals scored the first run of the game in the opening inning. Senior designated hitter Alex Mait (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill) put W&L on the board with a sacrifice fly to center field, which scored Stutts.
In the third inning, the Blue and White plated two runs. Senior third baseman Chris Nault (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) walked to start the frame. After advancing to second on a groundout, Nault scored on a RBI double by junior outfielder Keegan Dolan (Bethesda, Md./Landon) Dolan. Senior right fielder Will Salley (Augusta, Ga./Westside) then knocked in Dolan with a single to right.
The Eagles tied the game after scoring a run in the fifth, the sixth and the seventh. In the fifth, sophomore center fielder Wes Peacock scored on a sacrifice fly. Junior left fielder Daniel Iturrey connected on a RBI single in the sixth, and pinch hitter Josh Bokor hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh, which plated Peacock.
The Generals continue their road trip on Wednesday when they play at Piedmont at 3:00 pm.
