• Maragos and Stutts Earn VaSID All-State Honors

    The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) announced its 2013 College Division Baseball All-State Team on Monday, and Washington and Lee had two players receive accolades. Senior first baseman Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) was named to the first team, while senior shortstop Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) made the second team.

    For the 11th-consecutive year, Washington and Lee University has claimed the Dan Wooldridge Overall Sports Champion Cup, as announced by the Old Dominion Athletic Conference on Friday. The Generals claimed both the Women’s Commissioner’s Cup and the Men’s Commissioner’s Cup on their way to the overall title.

    For the second time this season, fifth-seeded Randolph-Macon’s Michael Helbig stifled the Washington and Lee baseball team’s bats, as the Yellow Jackets (19-15-1) handed the Generals (19-16) a 5-1 loss in the ODAC Tournament at City Stadium on Friday. Also in the game, senior shortstop Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) became the all-time hits leader at W&L.

    Washington and Lee Director of Athletics Jan Hathorn has announced that 179 students earned Scholar-Athlete awards during the recently completed winter term. The students are all members of W&L athletic teams and achieved a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.500.

    Despite scoring 28 combined runs in a doubleheader at Shenandoah on Tuesday, the Washington and Lee baseball team lost both ODAC contests. The Hornets (25-9, 13-7 ODAC) recorded a 28-14 victory in the opener, and then came from behind for a 15-14 walk-off win in the second game.

    The Washington and Lee baseball team gave up 23 runs, and were swept by Hampden-Sydney in a doubleheader on Saturday at Cap’n Dick Smith Field. The Tigers (18-15-1, 10-7 ODAC) edged out an 11-10 victory in the opener and were able to hold on for a 12-9 win in the second game.

    The Washington and Lee baseball team recently held its inaugural breast cancer awareness game on Saturday, March 23. Following the conclusion of the event, the total amount contributed by the Generals to the Susan G. Koman Passionately Pink for the Cure Foundation was over $3,500.

While the pitching staff stymied the Maroons (9-14, 2-6 ODAC), the Generals’ (12-9, 6-3 ODAC) offense powered the team to a 10-4 victory in game one and an 8-2 win in the second game.
