BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Jay Thompson's RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted Bridgewater over the Washington and Lee baseball team, 5-4, on Monday afternoon at Jopson Field.
Thompson's single to left scored Zach Hynes, who had doubled with two outs and gave the Eagles (21-8, 8-2 ODAC) the regular-season sweep over the Generals (11-15, 5-7).
BC's rally was made by possible by a wild 10th inning that saw both teams score a pair of runs to make it 4-4. The Generals took a 4-2 lead in the top of the frame on a two-run homer off the bat of junior Joe Scalzo (Ridgefield, Conn./Brunswick) that scored junior Will Salley (Augusta, Ga./Westside), who had single with one out.
In the bottom of the frame, the Eagles got a one-out single followed by a walk and then a balk that put two runners in scoring position. Devon Snow made it 4-3 in favor of W&L with a single to short that put runners on the corners. Nick Fulk added a bunt single to load the bases and the tying run then scored on a throwing error.
The wild finish came after a pitchers dual that saw W&L sophomore Nate Plein (El Cajon, Calif./St. Augustine) throw the Generals' second complete game in the last three and BC's Corey Armentrout threw 7.0 solid innings.
Plein earned a no decision after allowing just two runs despite giving up 10 hits with a walk and three strikeouts in 9.0 innings. Armemntrout countered with 7.0 innings or two-run ball, allowing just six hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
After BC took a 1-0 lead in the third inning, junior Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) belted a two-run home run for a 2-1 W&L lead.
The Eagles forced extra innings when Bryan Sanderson hit a two-out single that scored Thompson in the bottom of the eighth.
W&L had a chance to take a lead in the ninth inning, loading the bases with one out, but a 4-6-3 double play ended the Generals' threat.
Sophomore Mike Palicz (Brookfield, Va./Brookfield) took the loss, allowing one run on four hits with a strikeout in 1.1 innings. Kyle Henshaw earned the win with 3.0 innings of relief. He surrendered two runs on three hits and a walk with one strikeout.
Salley finished 3-for-4 with two runs for the Generals. Scalzo was 2-for-4 with two runs driven in and a run scored and Maragos was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. The Generals left 11 runners on base and Bridgewater turned five double playes
