Generals Earn Doubleheader Split with Randolph-Macon

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team scored nine runs over four innings in earning a 9-5 win in game two and a split of a doubleheader with Randolph-Macon on Saturday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

The Generals (11-14, 5-6 ODAC) dropped the opener, 4-3, before snapping six-game losing streak with the four-run win in the nightcap.

In the opener, Randolph-Macon (13-12-1, 6-4) kept the Generals off the scoreboard for the first seven innings in assuming a 3-0, before a late W&L rally fell just short.

R-MC opened the scoring in the second inning when senior Jordan Walton (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee-Davis) clubbed a solo home run to right and first-year Tim Benjamin hit a sacrifice fly for an early 2-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets made it 3-0 in the seventh as junior Michael Helbig's (Midlothian Va./Midlothian) one-out single drove in Walton, who had previously doubled off the wall in right center.

The Generals inched to within a run at 3-2 in the eighth inning on an RBI groundout by sophomore Josh Josephson (Boca Raton, Fla./American Heritage) and a sacrifice fly by junior Alex Mait (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill).

R-MC upped its advantage to two runs in the top of the ninth when Helbig drove in Walton with a double.

In the bottom of the ninth, junior Luke Deary (Carlisle, Mass./Groton School) led off with a double and moved to third with one out on a single by junior Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill./Loyola). A walk to junior Joe Scalzo (Brookfield, Conn./Brunswick) loaded the bases with two outs and junior Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) made it a 4-3 game with an RBI single deep in the hole at short before R-MC retired the side and closed out the game.

Junior Jamie Hendrick (Richmond, Va./L.C. Bird) earned the win for the Yellow Jackets with 8.0 strong innings. He allowed just two runs on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Senior Ryan Wood (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) nailed down the save, allowing one run on three hits and a walk with three strikeouts in 1.0 innings.

Senior Pat Smith (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) took the loss for W&L. He pitched his second complete game of the season, surrendering, four runs on 10 hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Stutts led the Generals at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a double, one run scored and an RBI. Mait finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and Maragos was 2-for-4.

Walton paced the Yellow Jackets, going 4-for-4 with a homer, two doubles, three runs scored and an RBI. Helbig added three hits in four at-bats, driving in two and scoring once, as the duo combined for seven of R-MC's 10 hits and scored all four of the Yellow Jacket runs.

In game two, Randoph-Macon once again jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings as junior Jon Witt (Chesterfield, Va./Trinity Episcopal) blasted a solo shot to left and first-year Zach Broaddus (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) added an RBI single.

The scored remained that way until a pair of W&L runs in the fifth tied the contest at 2-2.

The Generals took their first lead of the afternoon an inning later thanks to some help from the R-MC defense. Scalzo led off the inning reaching on an error and moved to third on a sac bunt and a groundout. With two outs, he scored on wild pitch for an unearned run and a 3-2 lead.

The lead swelled to five runs (7-2) in the seventh as a Stutts home run to left center highlighted a four-run inning. Maragos added a two-run double off the wall in right.

Junior Will Salley (Augusta, Ga./Westside) added an RBI double and Mait scampered home on a wild pitch in the eighth inning as the Blue and White assumed a 9-2 lead.

In the top of the ninth, R-MC mounted a small rally. The Yellow Jackets' first four runners reached base, with three of them coming around to score, the last one on a balk by junior Eric Wisotsky (West Windsor, N.J./Plainsboro North). Sophomore Nate Plein (El Cajon, Calif./St. Augustine) relieved Wisotsky and after giving up a single to senior Brian Jordan (Columbia, Va./Goochland), induced a double-play groundball followed by another groundout to end the game and preserve the 9-5 W&L win.

Junior Ian Shaw (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) started for the Generals and earned his fourth win of the season (4-3). He allowed four runs on nine hits with one walk and four strikeouts in 8.0 innings.

Helbig took the loss for the Yellow Jackets, as he surrendered three runs (2 ER) on five hits, two walks and three strikeouts in 6.0 innings.

Stutts finished 2-for-5 with the home run, two runs driven in and a run scored. Mait was 2-for-3 with two walks and a run scored. Senior Alston James (Columbia, S.C./Hammond) was 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Broaddus was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI for R-MC. Junior Austin Carpenter (Richmond, Va./Steward) was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

The Generals return to action on Monday, travelling to Bridgewater for a 4:00 pm game.
