W&L Baseball Falls to No. 22 Bridgewater, 2-0

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Bridgewater starter Joseph Lucas (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) limited the Washington and Lee baseball team to just two hits over 7.0 innings as the Eagles pulled out a 2-0 win over the Generals on Wednesday evening at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

The senior lefthander yielded just a pair of singles and two walks to go with six strikeouts until a 45 minute rain delay in the top of the eighth inning forced him out of the game. He improved to 2-2 on the season.

W&L senior righthander Jody Davis (McLean, Va./Langley) was nearly as effective for W&L. He allowed just one run on seven hits, three walks and two punchouts in 6.0 innings in taking the loss (2-3).

BC, ranked 22nd in the latest ABCA Poll, scored its first run in the sixth inning as back-to-back singles with one out put runners on first and second. Following a walk to senior Jay Thompson (Waynesboro, Va./Waynesboro) that loaded the bases, junior Christian Armstrong (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) lofted a sacrifice fly to left that scored junior Jonathan Mason (Sterling, Va./Park View).

With one out in the top of the eighth and a runner on second, a thunderstorm rolled through Lexington forcing a 45-minute stoppage. Out of the break junior Eric Wisotsky (West Windsor, N.J./Plainsboro North) recorded the final two outs of the inning.

In the ninth, a single, a balk and a sacrifice bunt put a runner on third with one out. After a groundout back to Wisotsky for the second out, senior Devin Snow (Manassas, Va./Osburn) hit a two-out single to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Junior Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) drew a leadoff walk off of first-year Corey Armentrout (Harrisonburg, Va./Broadway). However, Armentrout retired the next three batters in succession, including senior Alex Nuttycombe's (Newport News, Va./Menchville) diving grab of a line drive off the bat of junior Alex Mait (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill) for the game's final out.

For W&L, Stutts did not record an official at-bat, walking three times and laying down a sacrifice bunt. Senior Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and junior Chris Nault (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) were each 1-for-3, recording the only two W&L hits.

Snow, Nuttycombe, sophomore Bryan Sanderson (Lynchburg, Va./Jefferson Forest) and junior Andrew Hacker (Mechanicsville, Va./Lee Davis) all had two hits apiece for the Eagles. Sanderson doubled for the game's lone extra-base hit and Snow had an RBI.

The Generals return to action on Saturday when they host Randolph-Macon in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
