W&L Baseball Rallies for a 4-3 Win Over Southern Virginia

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team won its third straight game, rallying past Southern Virginia, 4-3, on Thursday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.

The Generals (3-5) rallied from a 3-1 seventh-inning deficit to record its second come-from-behind win in their last three games.

SVU (2-6) struck first, scoring an unearned run on a groundout by junior Dale Brown (Mesa, Ariz./Highland) in the top of the third.

W&L wasted no time tying the score at 1-1, as junior Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) singled home sophomore Keegan Dolan (Bethesda, Md./Landon) with two outs in the bottom of the frame to pull the Generals even.

SVU took a 3-1 lead with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Senior Andrew Snider (Lancaster, Calif./Antelope Valley College) singled in a run in the sixth and sophomore Brandon Alexander (Oakley, Calif./Freedom) hit a solo home run to left in the seventh.

The Generals' rally began in the bottom of the seventh as senior Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) lofted a sacrifice fly to left that scored Dolan, who led off the inning with a triple, to pull W&L to within a run at 3-2

In the ninth inning, junior Alex Mait (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill) led off with a single and was replaced with first-year Philip Anderson (Atherton, Calif./Menlo) as a pinch runner. Dolan then tied the game at 3-3 with a double that scored Anderson all the way from first.

First-year Nick Biumi (Cumming, Ga./Lambert) laid down a sacrifice bunt that allowed Dolan to advance to third with just one out. SVU then brought in junior Ed Greenhalgh (Roy, Utah/Roy), who intentionally walked Decembrino and Stutts to load the bases. Following the intentional free passes, Greenhalgh fell behind senior Alston James (Columbia, S.C./Hammond) 3-0, before coming back to work the count full. However, James took the payoff pitch down in the zone for ball four to force in Dolan with the game-winning run.

The rally made a winner of senior Lee Tackett (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams), who worked a perfect ninth in relief.

Senior Roger Strong (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) started for the Generals, surrendering two runs (1 ER) on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Junior Eric Wisotsky (West Windsor, N.J./Plainsboro North) relieved Strong and allowed one run on two hits with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings. Sophomore Jake Rudolph (Cordova, Tenn./Memphis University School) also logged one inning of perfect relief.

Sophomore Tyler King (San Ramon, Calif./California) took the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in 8.0 innings. He faced two batters in the ninth.

At the plate, the Generals were led by Dolan, who finished 4-for-4 with a double, a triple, three runs and an RBI. He also stole two bases. Stutts was 1-for-3 with two walks and an RBI and James finished 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

Snider was 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead SVU. Junior Robert Key (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) was 2-for-3 at the plate.

The Generals return to the diamond on Saturday when they host Emory & Henry in an ODAC doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
