Generals Baseball Felled by LaGrange, 4-1

LAGRANGE, Ga. -- The Washington and Lee baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision at LaGrange College on Monday afternoon.

W&L (0-3) struck first, scoring an unearned run in the top of the second inning to assume a 1-0 lead. Junior first baseman Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) ripped a one-out double to left and moved up to third on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Maragos was able to scamper home on a passed ball for the game's first run.

In the third inning, LaGrange struck for three runs, all unearned. Junior Cody Muren reached with one out on a throwing error by junior shortstop Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) and then stole second base. Senior righthander Jody Davis (McLean, Va./Langley) then induced junior Anthony Iannetta to popout. However, three consecutive two-out singles brought in three runs and the Panthers went up 3-1.

LaGrange made it 4-1 in the fifth inning after Iannetta singled, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and came in to score on a sacrifice fly to right off the bat of sophomore Travis Ross.

The Generals managed just one base runner the remainder of the game as the Panthers held on for the three-run win.

Davis (0-1) started for W&L and took the loss, allowing four runs (3 ER) on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 5.0 innings. Senior Pat Smith (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) came on in relief and pitched 3.0 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed two hits and no walks striking out three.

Junior Doug Scherer earned the win for the Panthers, allowing just the one unearned run on three hits with one walk and nine strikeouts in going the distance.

Maragos finished 1-for-3 with a run scored to lead W&L. Senior centerfielder Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) also had one hit in three at-bats and senior second baseman Alston James (Columbia, S.C./Hammond) finished 1-for-4 with a double.

Senior David Miller and junior Brent Kinsey each had two hits for the Panthers. Junior Jon Brock was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs.

The Generals return to the field on Tuesday when they take on Emory at 2:00 pm.
