W&L Baseball Races Past EMU, 10-2
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team pounded out 11 hits and drew eight walks in producing a 10-2 win over visiting Eastern Mennonite University on Wednesday evening at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
W&L (14-12, 11-5) quickly jumped on the Royals as senior Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) led off the bottom of the first with a single and then moved to third on a single by sophomore Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) with one out. Stutts moved into scoring position with a two-out steal of second base and sophomore Will Salley (Augusta, Ga./Westside) followed with a two-run single to give W&L an early 2-0 lead.
In the third inning, Stutts hit a leadoff single and back-to-back walks to sophomore Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) and Salley loaded the bases with nobody out. Junior C.J. Thompson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease) then drew a bases-loaded walk that forced in Stutts and put W&L up 3-0.
A two-run single by sophomore Mike Savas (Bernardsville, N.J./Delbarton) and an RBI groundout from junior Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) gave the Generals a 6-0 lead after three innings of play.
EMU (8-22, 2-14) got its run of the contest in the fourth inning as a pair of fielding errors led to first-year Ryan McAlister (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) trotting home and cutting W&L's lead to 6-1.
However, W&L countered with four more runs in the fifth inning. A pair of walks and a hit batsmen loaded the a bases for sophomore Alex Mait (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill) who hit a two-run single to left to make it 8-1. The Generals capped their scoring when Savas scored on a wild pitch and Cardona hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield.
Junior Beau Banglesdorf (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) hit an RBI double in the sixth inning for the Royals' final run.
Senior Gregg Laswell (Houston, Texas/Memorial) supplemented the Generals' offensive outburst with six strong innings to improve to 4-1 on the season. He allowed two runs (1 earned) on four hits with six strikeouts in lowering his ERA to 2.45 on the season.
Stutts led W&L at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 with a stolen base and a pair of runs. Mait was 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs, Savas finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, and Salley was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, two RBIs and two runs.
Junior Dylan Smith (Sterling, Va./Park View) led Eastern Mennonite, finishing 3-for-4 with a run. Banglesdorf finished 1-for-4 with the Royals' lone RBI.
Senior Jason Tate (Herndon, Va./Herndon) started and took the loss, falling to 1-6 on the season. He was charged with six runs (5 earned) on six hits and four walks with one strikeout in 3.0 innings.
W&L will now break for finals before returning to action on April 16, when it hosts Virginia Wesleyan in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
