LEXINGTON, Va. – Southern Virginia held off a pair of Washington and Lee rallies in sweeping a baseball doubleheader from the Generals, 11-9, and, 7-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Cap'n Dick Smith Field.
In game one, SVU (10-2) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning courtesy of RBI base hits by junior outfielder Andrew Snider (Lancaster, Calif.) and sophomore Trager Hintze (St. George, Utah/Snow Canyon) before W&L(6-8) answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.
An RBI double by sophomore Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) opened the scoring for the Generals . Junior Alston James (Columbia, S.C./Hammond) scored on a passed ball that allowed Stutts to advance to third and sophomore Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) followed with an RBI groundout to score Stutts and put W&L up 3-2.
SVU then tied the game in the third on a solo home run by Snider and surged ahead 8-3 with two runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth.
W&L was then able to creep to within 8-5 in the bottom half of the fifth frame on a two-run home run off the bat of Maragos.
In the bottom of the seventh, trailing 8-5, sophomore Joe Scalzo (Ridgefield, Conn./Brunswick) clubbed a three-run, two-out double to knot the game at 8-8 and send it to extra innings.
Hintze singled in a run in the top of the eighth to give SVU a 9-8 lead before Stutts drove in senior Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) pull W&L even at 9-9 and once again force an extra frame.
Following a walk to first-year pinch hitter Brandon Alexander (Oakley, Calif./Freedom) to lead off the ninth inning, senior Jake Johnson (Phoenix, Ariz.) drove in the game-winning run with a double and then added an insurance run on a single by sophomore Dale Brown (Mesa, Ariz./Highland).
The Generals did get the tying run to the plate in the ninth as sophomore Mike Savas (Bernardsville, N.J./Delbarton) walked and advanced to second base on a passed ball, but sophomore Ed Greenhalgh (Roy, Utah/Roy)got sophomore Alex Mait (Chesterfield, Va./Clover Hill) to fly out and Cardona to line out to end the threat.
Stutts finished 2-for-5 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored and Maragos was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a run to lead the Generals. Cardona added one hit in five at-bats with a stolen base and two runs.
Sophomore Ian Shaw (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) took the loss (1-1) for W&L, allowing three runs on five hits and a walk in 2.0 innings.
Snider was 5-for-6 with two RBIs and four runs for the Knights. Johnson finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs and Hintze was 3-for-6 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Greenhalgh was credited with the win. He allowed one run on one hit, three walks and a strikeout in 2.0 innings.
In game two, SVU tagged W&L junior starter Roger Strong (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) for five runs (0 earned) on one hit and two walks in 1.1 innings then held off another W&L rally to complete the three-game sweep of W&L in 2011.
After the Generals took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double by Maragos, SVU plated five runs in the second inning to assume a 5-0 lead. Brown had a two-run double in the inning and the a pair of W&L miscues in the field led to the early deficit.
After the Knights extended their lead to 7-1 in the fifth inning on a two-run double by sophomore Tyler Cox (Forest, Miss./Forest), the Generals made it a 7-2 ballgame in the sixth inning when sophomore Will Salley (Augusta, Ga./Westside) drove in Stutts with a single.
In the bottom of the seventh, Cardona reached on an error and scored when Stutts tripled to the wall in left center to put the score at 7-3. Stutts then scored on a passed ball. Margos then walked and Salley singled to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of sophomore Chris Nault (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood). However, Nault was struck out by SVU first-year Mitch Mantle (St. George, Utah/Dixie) on a full count to end the game.
Stutts was 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, an RBI and two runs scored to lead W&L. Salley was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Maragos was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, a double and an RBI.
Sophomore Josh Linn (Muskogee, Okla.) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead SVU. Cox finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Hintze scored a pair of runs for the Knights.
First-year Britt Dalton (Silver City, N.M./Silver) picked up the win, limiting W&L to two runs on five hits, three walks and six strikeouts in 6.0 innings.
W&L gets back on the diamond on Saturday when it travels to Guilford for and ODAC doubleheader. Game one is slated to begin at 12:00 pm.
