EMORY, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team opened up its ODAC slate with a doubleheader sweep of Emory & Henry at DeVault Field on Sunday afternoon.
W&L (4-3) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 16-6 win in a game one and won a rain-shortened game, 4-3, in the nightcap. With the sweep, the Wasps dropped to 0-8 on the season.
W&L opened its game-one scoring with seven runs in the third inning. The Generals then added five more in the fourth and another three runs in the fifth inning to cruise to their fourth win of the season.
Junior second baseman Alston James (Columbia, S.C./Hammond) led the Generals with a 4-for-6 showing at the plate with a team-high five RBIs to go with three runs scored. Sophomore Will Salley (Augusta, Ga./Westside) was 4-for-6 with four runs scored and an RBI, sophomore shortstop Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) was 3-for-6 with a double and two RBIs and sophomore Luke Deary (Carlisle, Mass./Groton School) had three hits in four at-bats. He had four runs driven, including a three-run home run, and two runs scored.
Sophomore Ian Shaw (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood) picked up the win with 3.0 innings in relief of junior starter Jody Davis (McLean, Va./Langley). Shaw (1-0) allowed just one run on three hits with a strikeout.
A full boxscore from game one was not immediately available.
Junior Roger Strong (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) earned the win in game two. He allowed three runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings before the game was called due to rain. He did not walk a batter and struck out two in improving to 2-1 on the season.
The Generals struck early, scoring a pair of runs in the first inning on an RBI groundout by Stutts and an RBI single off the bat of Maragos.
The Wasps countered with a single run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by sophomore Eric Houff to cut W&L's lead to 2-1.
Following a scoreless second inning, each team added a single run in the third. For W&L, junior outfielder Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) scored on a Maragos double and the Wasps received an RBI double from Houff to keep it a one-run game at 3-2.
W&L extended its lead to 4-2 in the fourth inning courtesy of an RBI single by junior outfielder C.J. Thompson (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Nease).
In the fifth inning, E&H crept to within a single run, 4-3, when junior Josh McMillan drove in a run on a groundout, but Strong was able to get Houff to pop out with a runner on to end the threat.
Decembrino finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and Maragos had two hits in three at-bats, with a double and two RBIs. Thompson finished 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Junior Will Schulhof led the Wasps with a 3-for-3 showing at the plate. He scored one run. Houff was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and McMillan recorded one hit in three at-bats with an RBI and a run scored.
Junior Zach Jones took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits, one walk and four strikeouts in 4.0 innings.
The Generals return to action on Tuesday when they host Southern Virginia for a single game beginning at 3:00 pm.
