W&L Baseball Falls to Oglethorpe, 10-6

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Washington and Lee baseball team dropped a 10-6 decision to Oglethorpe on Sunday afternoon at Anderson Field.

W&L (2-1) took an early lead after the scoring the game's first run on an RBI single by sophomore first baseman Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) in the top of the first, but Oglethorpe proceeded to score 10 unanswered runs, including four each in the second and fifth innings, to assume a 10-2 lead after five innings.
W&L began chipping away at OU's lead, scoring three runs in the seventh inning on RBI singles by sophomores Will Salley (Augusta, Ga./Westside) and Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) and an RBI groundout by senior Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) that cut Oglethorpe's lead to 10-4.
The Generals then tallied single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to pull within 10-6, but could get no closer.
Sophomore designated hitter Luke Deary (Carlisle, Mass./Groton) led the Generals with a 3-for-4 showing at the plate. He doubled, tripled and scored a pair of runs. Junior outfielder Mike Decembrino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) was 3-for-5 with a run scored and Salley finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored.
Junior Roger Strong (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) took the loss (1-1) for the Generals, allowing six runs (4 earned) on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 2.0 innings.
Andy Farrey led Oglethorpe with three hits in five at-bats, while driving in five runs. Brendan Pilger added a three-run home run and Matt Cornwell was 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.
Mark Hoban picked up the win for OU, allowing four runs on nine hits, one walk and eight strikeouts in 6.0 innings.
W&L returns to action on Tuesday when it takes on Emory at 2:00 pm.
