GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Washington and Lee baseball team opened its 2011 campaign with a doubleheader sweep of Greensboro College on Sunday afternoon at War Memorial Field.
The Generals (2-0) took game one, 12-2, and shutout the Pride (0-4), 7-0, in the nightcap.
Junior Roger Strong (Spencerport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) picked up the win (1-0) in the opener, tossing 5.0 innings of one-run ball. He allowed three hits, one run (unearned), walked two batters and struck out four.
Sophomore shortstop Jonathan Stutts (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) and sophomore first baseman Alex Maragos (Chicago, Ill./Loyola) each had a pair of base hits and drove in three runs. Sophomore outfielder George Youmans (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian) added a base knock and two RBIs, as did junior third baseman Chas Straface (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township).
In the nightcap, junior Jody Davis (McLean, Va./Langley) started and earned the win with 3.0 shutout innings. He allowed just one hit, two walks and he struck out four.
Senior Gregg Laswell (Houston, Texas/Memorial) and junior Lee Tackett (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) combined to throw four shutout innings in relief.
Senior outfielder Anthony Cardona (Lower Gwynedd, Pa./Chestnut Hill) led the Generals' offense, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Stutts was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
W&L returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Oglethorpe for a single game. Game time is slated for 2:00 pm.
